5 Lessons from Prime Big Deal Days for a Winning Holiday Season

October 19, 2026

Prime Big Deal Days 2026 ad spend nearly doubled year over year. Here are five lessons from TripleLift data that advertisers can apply to Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the rest of Q4.

Prime Big Deal Days (PBDD) used to be the quieter sibling of the summer Prime Day extravaganza. Not anymore.

Amazon’s October event is the first big shopping moment of Q4, and in 2026 advertisers treated it that way. TripleLift data shows total PBDD ad spend up 93% year over year. And while Prime Day ran for four days, PBDD did its work in two, averaging 41.8% more spend per day than Prime Day.

That makes PBDD the best dress rehearsal we have for the holiday rush. Here’s what it taught us, and how to use it before Black Friday and Cyber Monday arrive.

Lesson 1: Short Events Reward the Prepared

What happened: In the two weeks before PBDD, spend stayed steady. No slow build, no early ramp. Then it jumped 83.6% overnight into Day 1 and climbed again into Day 2.

What it means for Q4: Compressed shopping moments don’t give you time to set up once they start. Black Friday and Cyber Monday will move just as fast, and the brands that win are the ones whose deals, audiences, and creative are already built and waiting.

Do this: Finalize your holiday deals and audience segments in early November. Treat event day as the moment you switch budget on, not the moment you start building.

Lesson 2: Save Some Firepower for the Finish

What happened: Advertisers spent 48.7% more on PBDD’s Day 2 than on Day 1. Prime Day’s day-to-day build was a much gentler 17.9%. PBDD’s second day ran 63.1% above the matching day of Prime Day.

What it means for Q4: Advertisers put their biggest push behind the close of the event, not the open. The holiday season has its own closing moments: Cyber Monday, final shipping deadlines, last-minute gifting. Front-loading your budget leaves you short when it counts.

Do this: Pace holiday budgets so you still have room to scale in the final days of each moment. Build in flexibility to shift spend toward what’s working as the event unfolds.

Lesson 3: When the Stakes Go Up, Advertisers Choose Curated Inventory

What happened: PBDD drew a bigger share of spend through private marketplace deals than Prime Day did, and that share grew again on Day 2. Shopping, the largest category at 41.2% of spend, leaned well into curated deals. So did Medical Health, Industries, and Personal Finance, all running deal shares well above the event average.

What it means for Q4: This matches what we see across tentpole events: when budgets and pressure peak, advertisers move toward curated, controlled environments rather than the open auction. Quality-sensitive and regulated categories feel this most.

Do this: Lock in your PMP deals before peak weeks, not during them. With TL Direct, deals can be built and launched in minutes, not weeks, but the planning still has to happen first.

Lesson 4: Q4 Isn’t Just a Retail Story

What happened: Shopping led PBDD, but much of the growth came from elsewhere. Year over year:

  • Medical Health: +189%
  • Food & Drink: +154%
  • Style & Fashion: +140%
  • Technology & Computing: +101%

Business & Finance more than doubled its share of spend compared with Prime Day. Family & Relationships, still a small category, grew its share nearly fourfold.

What it means for Q4: Retail brands aren’t the only ones competing for holiday attention. Health, finance, and lifestyle advertisers are showing up in force, which means more competition for the same premium inventory.

Do this: If you’re a retail brand, plan for a more crowded market and secure inventory early. If you’re outside retail, Q4 tentpoles are a proven moment for your category, so plan for them rather than sitting them out.

Lesson 5: Plan for the Season, Not Just the Sale

What happened: The biggest categories, Shopping, Style & Fashion, and Technology & Computing, anchored both Prime Day and PBDD. But underneath, the mix shifted with the calendar. Home & Garden and Pets pulled back noticeably from their June Prime Day levels. Medical Health, Business & Finance, and Family & Relationships grew.

What it means for Q4: Advertisers are responding to what consumers have on their minds, not just to the event itself. In October, that likely means health plan decisions, year-end financial planning, and family moments ahead of the holidays.

Do this: Build your Q4 messaging around holiday-season mindsets: gifting, planning, and family. A deal alone isn’t a strategy.

Your Q4 Checklist

  1. Build early. Have deals, audiences, and creative ready before each moment starts.
  2. Pace for the finish. Hold budget for the closing days of each event.
  3. Go curated. Secure PMP deals ahead of peak weeks.
  4. Expect company. More categories are competing for holiday attention.
  5. Match the mindset. Align messaging with what shoppers are thinking about in Q4.
